We are very keen to make ourselves known both nationally and internationally for the high quality of our dental graduates. It is our mission to take a leading role in the region of dentistry to prepare our students as qualified doctors to serve the communities.

About Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit

Course Offered & Affiliation:

Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit offers 5 years BDS course approved by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Bangladesh. It is affiliated by University of Dhaka and recognized by Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BMDC).

Goals & Objectives of DCMC Dental Unit:

Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit is aimed to produce need based skilled Community oriented doctors. Efforts will be given to help the students to gain an updated knowledge and to produce competent, committed and accountable doctors who will be able to lead the healthcare sector as leaders to fulfill the health problems of the community and to acquire strong background for future training and higher studies.

The Campus Location:

The campus of the Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit is located in the center of Dhaka city at 190/1, Boro Moghbazar, Wireless Rail gate, Dhaka-1217, Bangladesh. At present, Pre clinical, Para clinical & clinical academic activities are running in 8 storied building. Clinical Services, teaching and training activities are held in adjoining 500-bedded hospital complex. The hospital of the college is 14-storied building (Under Construction). At present hospital building is 12 storied. The college has access to urban and rural health care centers at different places of Bangladesh.

Library:

The library is well furnished with comfortable sitting arrangement, situated in the hospital building. It has a collection of update common textbooks, reference books, journals in various subjects which can provide up to date information to the students and teachers. The library is also equipped with computers along with Internet connections. The library is provided with separate reading area for the students as well as for the teachers. The students are allowed to borrow textbooks for reading in college and at home. It remains open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm in all working days books, Journals (National & International) Periodicals are sufficiently available as per University requirements.

Computer Facilities:

Computer facilities along with free internet connection are available for students and Teacher in every department.

Canteen Facilities:

A large canteen is within the campus. Canteen services are available from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Canteen provides verities of palatable and hygienic food at a cheaper rate for the students, teachers & staff of the college & hospital.

Hostel:

Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit has befitting hostel accommodation for the female student as well as for foreign students near by the college campus. In addition rental accommodation for male students is also available around the college campus.

Hospital:

Our hospital is equipped with all modern equipments. It has 3 states of operation rooms & 500 beds for patients. It has all the departments required for training of dental students & intern doctors. The departments are Conservative Dentistry, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology & Oral Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, General Pathology and Radiology.

Academic Faculty:

Dhaka Community Medical College Dental unit is running with good number of experienced faculty members. At present all departments are enriched with Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Lecturers& Guest teachers. The Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Science of Dental Materials, Dental Public Health, Oral Anatomy & Oral Physiology, General Pharmacology & Dental Pharmacology and Forensic medicine are adequately spaced and equipped with modern instruments, logistics & educated manpower.

Unit Administration:

The Dental Unit runs on a self financing and non profitable basis. Any financial deficits in college budget are met up by the Dhaka Community Hospital Trust fund. Principal, Vice principal & Head of the Dental Unit along with the members of the academic council look after the manpower management of the educational programs and maintains the academic atmosphere of the college. Dental Administration oversees the educational, patient care, research, financial and physical functions of the college.

The class hour is from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. (in addition 2 hours clinical teaching in the evening for clinical students).

Medium of Teaching:

English is the medium of teaching in the Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit.

Admission to BDS Course:

Admission will be on the basis of merit with the terms & conditions as prescribed by the Government of Bangladesh. The required procedures for admission in the Private Dental Unit and selection of the candidates for admission are made on the basis of the results of the admission test conducted by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS).

Documents to be submitted by the candidate

For admission in BDS course, the students will apply in a prescribed form (to be collected from the Principal’s office or Dental Unit Head’s office). The completed form along with the following documents is to be submitted to the Dental Unit Head’s office on or before the date as declared in the advertisement by DGHS.

  1. Attested photocopies of SSC & HSC or equivalent examination marks sheets.
  2. Attested photocopies of SSC & HSC or equivalent examination certificate or testimonial.
  3. Four (4) copies of recent passport size attested photographs.
  4. Nationality certificate from Chairman of the Union Parishad or Ward Commissioner of Metropolitan City or National ID card.
  5. In case of the reserved seats for the children of Freedom Fighters, a Freedom Fighter certificate from the Secretary & Honorable Minister or State Minister of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs or an attested photocopy of Freedom Fighter certificate counter signed by the Honorable Prime Minister during the period of 1997-2001 in favor of the parents participating in Liberation War).

Medical Examination:

The selected candidates will be examined by a medical board for their Physical fitness.

Assessment System:

  1. There will be in-course (card/ item/ term) and end-course(professional assessment for the students in each phase(1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th phase) of the course.
  2. Formative assessment will be done through results of items, card & term ending examination, class attendance and other performance.
  3. For formative assessment, 10% marks from written marks of each subject is allocated.
  4. For MCQ of each subject, 20% marks from written marks is allocated.
  5. For SAQ of each subject, 70% marks from written marks is allocated.
  6. Oral part of the examination will be structured.
  7. OSRE will be used for assessing skills.

Criteria for eligibility to appear in the Professional Examination:

  1. 75% attendance in Lecture & Tutorial classes separately.
  2. Completion of card & practical note books.
  3. 60% marks in average in three term examinations.
  4. 60% marks in average in three item examinations.

Facilities available in Dhaka Community Medical College, Hospital & Dental Unit:

The institution is situated in the heart of the Dhaka city and 10 km away from the International Airport. The big shopping malls are nearest to the college (10 minutes walk).The International hotels (Hotel Intercontinental and Hotel Sonargaon) are only 20 minutes walk from the institute.

Accommodation: Dhaka Community Medical College Dental Unit has well arranged accommodation facility which is only 3 minutes walk from the institute.

Food arrangement: Quality Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks and Dinners are available in the college cafeteria in cheap rate.

Library: The College has a well-arranged big library which contains a large number of medical books and national and international medical journals. It is also a free Internet zone with sufficient computer facilities.

Safe drinking water facility is available in both hostel College & Hospital area. Sustainable and politics free academic environment is ensured here.

The Institute has working experience with Harvard University, USA and Malaysian University in joint collaboration. At least two International conferences are held here in each year.

The annual indoor & outdoor sports of the unit are held every year. All students, teachers & staff are encouraged to participate in the sports. The annual picnic is held in a beautiful place outside the Dhaka following weekly cultural programs in every year & participated by students, teachers & staff. We have a 500 bedded hospital with emergency management and admission facilities. A large number of patients is present in both the indoors and the outdoors for teaching purpose. Health service facilities are available here in low cast. We have a sufficient number of highly qualified experienced teachers who teach the students efficiently. In course of time, it will be a Dental University with different disciplines.

 Pre clinical & Para clinical departments of DCMC Dental Unit:

Science of Dental Materials:

Provides both the scientific background and the practical skills needed by students to make the best use of new and available materials.

Oral Anatomy and Physiology with embryology:

Educates developmental biology, oral anatomy and oral histology/embryology.

Dental Public Health:

Provides non-clinical specialty of dentistry involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations rather than individuals.

Dental Pharmacology:

Educates about the drugs commonly used in the treatment of dental disease & the drugs primarily used in medicine.

Clinical departments of DCMC Dental Unit:

Conservative Dentistry:

Diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the tooth root.

Operative Dentistry: Diagnosis, prevention and minimally-invasive treatment of decay. Conservative correction of esthetic problems with dental bonding.

Oral Pathology, Radiology, & Medicine: Investigation of clinical, radiographic, and microscopic features of oral / maxillofacial diseases and abnormalities.

Pediatric Dentistry: Oral health care for infants, children, and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs.

Preventive & Community Dentistry: Improvement of the public’s oral health through prevention and control of oral diseases.

Family Dentistry: Diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the tooth root.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery: Grafting, dental implant placement and other surgical treatments of conditions, injuries, and esthetics of the teeth, jaws, and face.

Prosthodontics: Complete oral rehabilitation, including the use of dentures, crowns, bridges, veneers, & implants.

Orthodontics: Correction of irregularities of the teeth, bite, and jaw.

Periodontics: Treatment of the supporting dental structures, including gums and alveolar bone, and their replacements by grafting or implants.

Dental Administration Dental Administration oversees the educational, patient care, research, financial and physical functions of the unit.
